Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke?
When you hear the word freedom, what do you think of? You may think of social freedoms like speech, religion, and ownership. You may think of the moment when you’re handed the keys to your first car, when you become an adult or when you become of drinking age. As humans, we long to be free, to make our own decisions, and pave our own way. But what is freedom? I think the most common understanding of what freedom is, is simply independence. We strive for independence because we selfishly believe that our lives are better when we’re in the driver’s seat. But God has a different lens as to what freedom looks like.
For a little over a week, we’ve been taking part in a fast. The whole point of a fast is to become physically dependent on God in order to symbolize a spiritual dependency on the Spirit. Isaiah 58:6 says that when we become dependent on God, “the bonds of wickedness”, will be loosed! Every yoke will be broken! When we seek out independency, we run from the freedom that Christ has promised us. But when we surrender our hearts, our thoughts, our actions and become utterly dependent on Him, we are promised real, true, bond-breaking freedom.
God, I thank you that you promise me freedom. Because of Christ, you have allowed me to live forgiven and free. Help me to be dependent on you today. Just as I depend on water to sustain my thirst, I pray that I will depend on you to sustain my soul. I give you my thoughts, I give you my actions, I give you the breath in my lungs. Everything that I have is already yours. I trust that you will provide for me. Amen.
Today, pray for our DeLand location. Pray that the Lord continues to bring his presence in our midst. Pray the Lord gives us the boldness to bring His presence everywhere we go in DeLand. Pray for favor in Deland and for a permanent location.
