“Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed! I know, because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. I only need to say, “Go,” and they go, or “Come,” and they come”
Authority. This word comes with baggage or stigmas attached to it. So, let's leave all of that at the door today.
We need to note authority as we look at prayer in the life of a believer because Jesus modeled it for us. This passage in Matthew opened my eyes to who the REAL Jesus was. Not only was He the savior of the world, God in the flesh, a man who loves other, or a dude who like to have a great time with His friend, but He was a man who modeled authority for us.
So, let’s look at Matthew 8. We a gentile, someone who is not of the people of God, ran to Jesus. He knows people claim Jesus is the Messiah; he knows Jesus is gaining traction in the area and a following, but also, this man knows what authority looks like. He was a superior officer over military troops. And what we see in Jesus… is authority like he's never seen before. You and I know what he sees; it's the very Spirit of authority at work in the ministry of Jesus.
That same authority at work in the Earthly Ministry of Jesus is the same in you now. "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:18b-20.
Everything has been placed under the authority of Jesus. You've been unleashed through His Spirit with the same authority, not for your benefit, but so God would receive the glory to the world around you.
Today focus on that truth "you have been given authority." Pause as long as you need to. Let the Lord grow in you the truth that He has called you in that authority to pray and minister to those around you.
Lord, thank you for Jesus. Thank you that He was given all authority from the Father, so the Spirit could empower me to share the truth of Jesus. Father, grow awareness of the Spirit's authority in me. Make me more aware of your leading to pray with authority. Lord, would you root me in your power and now my own. Thank for, Father, for your faithfulness. Amen
