40 Days Discussion Questions :: Week 4
A Better Way to Be Rich – Mark 14:1-9
The idea of being rich can captivate our hearts, filling us with dreams of comfort, security, and prestige. But what if we’ve misunderstood the nature of true riches? You might be surprised, but Jesus actually wants you to be rich! But this isn’t about hoarding wealth; it’s a groundbreaking perspective on being rich toward God. This week, we will look at how Jesus offers us a far better way to be wealthy, not in the material sense, but in a way that satisfies the deepest yearnings of our souls.
Memory Verse for Week 4: “Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:6–7
1. What thought or point from this week’s message stood out to you?
2. Can you describe something that is very valuable to you but would probably not be valuable to anyone else?
3. Read 1 Timothy 6:17-19. These verses give two commands. Summarize (put them in your own words) what these commands are saying.
4. Read Mark 14:1-9. What observations can you make about this passage? What do you think about Jesus’ response to what the woman did for him?
5. Pastor James said that we need to determine what we value. Mary demonstrated that Jesus was more valuable to her than anything else. What made Jesus valuable to Mary? What makes Jesus valuable to you?
6. Jesus’ acceptance of the woman’s offering underscores a vital principle: what we give matters, not just in its material worth but in the love and sacrifice it represents. What do you think was more valuable to Jesus, the perfume or Mary's heart, when she gave it? Why did you answer the way you did?
7. Read 2 Corinthians 9:6–7. What does the passage teach us about the principle of sowing generously? What do these verses teach us about trusting in God’s abundant provision?
8. As Jesus teaches, being rich is about valuing what truly matters, understanding the significance of our gifts, and embracing the truth that we cannot out-give God. Let's pray for the courage and faith to live out this calling. How can you see this transforming our lives and the lives around us?
