1. Have you ever experienced a feeling of being overwhelmed to the point of not knowing where to begin when it comes to understanding and living out the teachings of Jesus in God’s word?
2. Read Mark 12:28-34. Why do you think the religious leaders were trying to trap Jesus with their questions? What was the significance of the scribe asking about the most important commandment, and how did Jesus respond?
3. According to Jesus, what are the two most important commandments? How does the concept of loving God and loving your neighbor simplify the complexity of biblical instructions?
4. Read 2 Corinthians 8:1-5. How do you see the relationship between loving God and loving others in the example of the Macedonian churches in this passage? What actions did they take that demonstrated their love for God and people?
5. In James 2:14-17, James talks about faith without works being dead. How does this relate to the discussion about loving God and people? Why is it essential for faith to be accompanied by actions?
6. Pastor John mentioned that we often try to separate the call to love God from the call to love others. Have you ever found yourself leaning more towards one of these aspects at the expense of the other? Share your experiences.
7. How do you see the dangers of either emphasizing loving God exclusively or loving people exclusively? Have you encountered situations where one of these imbalances caused issues within a church or community?
8. Pastor John emphasized that being a follower of Jesus means being both a lover of God and a lover of people. How can you personally strive to strike a balance between these two aspects in your life and within your faith community? What practical steps can you take this week to grow in both areas?
