5 Ways to Turn Down the Noise and Find True Peace

By Pastor James Hilton

Anxiety,Depression,Sermon Recap

Life is loud. Responsibilities, worries, and expectations create constant mental noise. We often think controlling everything will bring peace, but it only adds to the chaos. King David, in Psalm 131, learned a different way. He stopped striving, let go of control, and found quietness in his soul. Here’s how you can do the same.

1. Recognize That Control is an Illusion

Trying to control everything—people, outcomes, or the future—only leads to frustration. David admitted there were things beyond his understanding and power. When you try to control every detail, anxiety increases because deep down, you know you can't. Real peace comes from surrendering to God's sovereignty.

Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to trust in the Lord rather than our own understanding.

2. Stop Seeking Answers for Everything

David acknowledged that some things were too high for him to grasp. Do you have a category in your life for "I don’t know"? Or do you feel the need to have an answer for everything? The older we get, the more we realize how much we don’t know. Instead of feeling anxious about the unknown, trust that God knows what you don’t.

3. Let Go of Self-Imposed Pressure

The desire to control puts an unrealistic weight on our shoulders. We create expectations about how life should go, how people should act, and how situations should turn out. But when we obsess over outcomes, we set ourselves up for stress and disappointment. David found peace by letting God be God. You can do the same.

4. Quiet Your Mind by Surrendering

Isaiah 30:15 says, "Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength." The world tells us to push harder, work more, and strive for success. But inner peace isn’t found in control—it’s found in surrender. When you let go of what you can’t control, the noise in your mind begins to quiet.

5. Wean Yourself Off Control Like a Child

David compared his soul to a weaned child. Weaning is hard. A baby resists, cries, and fights the process. But it’s necessary for growth. Likewise, letting go of control won’t happen overnight. You may resist, struggle, or feel uneasy. But the more you release, the more you’ll experience true peace. Over time, you’ll trust God not just for what He gives you, but for who He is.

Turning down the noise in life starts with surrender. Stop trying to steer, check the GPS, and change the oil all at once. Let God drive. Trust that He is in control, so you don’t have to be. Like David, you can find rest for your soul.

Psalm 131:3 reminds us: "Put your hope in the Lord both now and forevermore."

Are you ready to release control and embrace peace? Start today by asking God to help you surrender what you cannot change.
