You can fulfill God’s Dream for your life, Despite Past Poor Decisions
Ephesians 3:20 – Pastor Billy Island
Don’t stop here, keep the conversation going on The Breakdown. Each week, we take this message further, talk through real-life applications, and wrestle with the questions you’re already asking. Just search “Journey Church with James Hilton” wherever you listen to podcasts or on YouTube.
- If you could hit a “reset button” on one area of your life — no consequences, no memory of it — would you use it? Why or why not?
- In this message, Pastor Billy talks about the idea that “God’s dream for your life is always bigger than your dream for your life.”What does that stir up in you — hope, skepticism, excitement? Why?
- Ephesians 3:20 (MSG) says, “God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams!”Does that feel easy or hard to believe when you’re carrying the weight of past mistakes? Share your thoughts.
- Pastor Billy walks through the story of Peterin Mark 14. Peter makes some pretty bold claims about his loyalty to Jesus, then stumbles badly. Here are the four reasons Pastor Billy identifies for why we make poor choices. Which one do you find yourself most vulnerable to? What does that tend to look like in your life?
-
- Pride — Mark 14:29 says, “Even if everyone else stumbles, I won’t.”
- Fatigue — Mark 14:37
- Fear of Disapproval — Mark 14:54a
- Short-Term Pleasure — Mark 14:54b
- Before Peter even fails, Jesus tells him in Luke 22:31-32, “Simon Peter, Satan has asked to test you, but I have prayed for you that your faith will not fail. Sowhenyou have repented and recovered, I want you to strengthen the other disciples.” Notice Jesus says “when,” not “if.” What does that tell you about how Jesus sees our failures?
- Romans 11:29 says, “For God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable. They can’t be withdrawn.”How does that change the way you think about your past mistakes and your future potential?
- Pastor Billy mentions three things that keep us stuck in the past — grief, guilt, and grudges. How would you define each of those in your own words, and how do you think each one holds a person back?
- Romans 8:1 says, “So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus!”Is there an area of your life where you still carry condemnation, even though Scripture says you don’t have to? What makes it hard to let that go?
Prayer
Lord, I’ll be honest — sometimes it’s hard to believe that Your dream for my life is bigger than my own, especially when I look at some of the choices I’ve made. But Your Word says that Your gifts and Your calling are irrevocable, that they can’t be taken back — and I want to hold onto that today.
I ask You to help me honestly own the poor choices I’ve made, without excuses. Give me the humility to ask for Your mercy and the courage to actually receive Your forgiveness — not just know about it, but feel it and live like it’s true.
And God, where I’m holding onto grudges or guilt or grief that’s keeping me stuck in the past, will You help me let go? I don’t want to be anchored to what’s behind me when You’re calling me forward.
Like Peter, I know You’re already out ahead of me. Help me have the courage to follow You there.
Amen.
