You Were Never Meant To Carry This
Matthew 11:28-30
Don’t stop here, keep the conversation going on The Breakdown. Each week, we take this message further, talk through real-life applications, and wrestle with the questions you’re already asking. Just search “Journey Church with James Hilton” wherever you listen to podcasts or on YouTube.
- If you could instantly remove one stressor from your life — like taking off a heavy weighted vest you’ve been wearing all day — what would it be, and why?
- Shana shared that many of us are carrying weight that God never asked us to carry. What stood out to you most from that idea? Does anything immediately come to mind when you think about weight you might be carrying?
- Shana talked about how this weight didn’t show up all at once — it was gradual. Can you relate to that? What does it feel like when something heavy builds up slowly over time without you even noticing?
- Read Matthew 11:28-30. Jesus says, “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”In your own words, what do you think Jesus is actually inviting people into here? Who do you think He is talking to?
- In Jesus’ day, religious leaders had added rule after rule and expectation after expectation on top of what God originally said — and that this is why people were exhausted. Shana referenced Matthew 23:4, where Jesus says the religious leaders “tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders.”How do you think that kind of pressure — whether it comes from religion, culture, or social media — shows up in our lives today?
- Shana made this statement: “What this means is that if He didn’t give it, I don’t have to keep carrying it.”What do you think she means by that? How does that change the way we think about the weight we carry?
- Shana identifies six specific “weights” she had been carrying: the pressure to parent a certain way, people-pleasing, comparison, mom guilt, the pressure to have it all together, and the belief that she wasn’t enough. Which of those resonated with you the most, and why?
- For each weight she named, she paired it with a truth from Scripture. Let’s look at a few of them together:
-
- Galatians 5:1 says, “It is for freedom that Christ set us free.” How does this speak to the pressure we feel to do things the “right” way?
- John 15:16 says, “You did not choose me, but I chose you.” What does it mean to you that God chose you — not because you earned it, but simply because He did?
- Romans 8:1 says, “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” How does that truth push back against guilt?
- 2 Corinthians 12:9 says, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Why is it so hard for us to actually believe that His grace is enough?
- Shana shared that underneath all the different weights she was carrying — the comparison, the guilt, the people-pleasing — there was one deeper question driving all of it: “Am I enough?”Do you find yourself asking that question? Where does it show up most in your life?
- Shana said, “Rest is not found in getting your life under control and doing more. Rest is found in bringing your life to Him.”Be honest — how often do you actually bring your burdens to Jesus versus trying to manage them on your own? What makes it hard to let go?
- At the end of the sermon, Shana invited people to open their hands as a posture of release and surrender. If you were to open your hands right now, what would you be releasing to God?
Prayer
Lord, I come to you today weary. I’ll be honest — I’ve been carrying a lot. Some of it I picked up without even realizing it. Some of it has been there so long I forgot it wasn’t mine to carry in the first place.
You said in Your Word to come to You when I’m weary and burdened, and that You would give me rest. So today, I’m coming. I’m opening my hands and I’m choosing to lay it down — the pressure, the guilt, the comparison, the fear that I’m not enough.
Lord, I know I’m probably going to be tempted to pick it back up. So when I do, remind me. Remind me that Your grace is sufficient. Remind me that You already chose me. Remind me that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ.
I don’t want to live striving anymore. I want to live free. Teach me what that actually looks like in my everyday life. I trust You with what I’ve been carrying.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
