You Don’t Have to Force It
Genesis 41:1-43
Don’t stop here, keep the conversation going on The Breakdown. Each week, we take this message further, talk through real-life applications, and wrestle with the questions you’re already asking. Just search “Journey Church with James Hilton” wherever you listen to podcasts or on YouTube.
Faith becomes difficult when life no longer looks like the story we expected God to write, leaving us disappointed, weary, and stuck in seasons we never would have chosen. When prayers seem unanswered, and heaven feels silent, the real challenge is learning how to keep trusting that God is still working even when we cannot yet see it. This week, we will discuss how we can keep trusting that God is still working even when life goes off script.
- If you could skip any difficult “waiting season” in your life — a long line, a slow process, a hard in-between moment — and just jump straight to the outcome, what would it be? What do you think you might have missed by skipping it?
- Pastor James talks about what happens when life stops looking like what we thought God was doing. What part of Joseph’s story stood out to you most, and why?
- Read Genesis 41:1-8. In these verses, none of Pharaoh’s wise men could provide the answers he needed. Why do you think human wisdom alone often falls short when we are facing deeper spiritual or emotional struggles?
- Genesis 40:23 says, “The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.”Then Genesis 41:1says, “When two full years had passed…”What do you think those two years might have felt like for Joseph? What emotions do you imagine he wrestled with?
- Pastor James made this statement: “The real battle is no longer your circumstances. The real battle becomes your interpretation of your circumstances.”What do you think he meant by that? Do you agree or disagree?
- Joseph’s story involves betrayal by his brothers, slavery, false accusation, and years in prison — all while trying to remain faithful to God. Based on what you know of this story, why do you think it’s significant that Joseph was in prison becausehe was faithful, not because he disobeyed God?
- When Joseph finally stood before Pharaoh in Genesis 41:15-16, Pharaoh said, “I had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.”Joseph responded, “I cannot do it…but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires.”Why is that response so surprising given the pressure of the moment? What does it reveal about how Joseph had changed?
- Pastor James described three key truths from Joseph’s story:
-
- Don’t assume God stopped working.
- Don’t force what only God can do.
- Don’t forget God can shift your story in a moment.
Which of those three resonates most with you right now, and why?
- Read Genesis 41:39-41. How does the suddenness of Joseph’s reversal change the way you think about hidden or difficult seasons in your own life?
- Pastor James said, “Some of you are letting your circumstances preach to you louder than God’s promises.”What circumstance in your life right now is tempting you to interpret God through pain, silence, or disappointment rather than through His promises?
- Think about the pressure Joseph felt standing before Pharaoh. Pastor James said that pressure has a way of pushing us toward self-reliance — trying to fix it, force it, or figure it out on our own. Where in your life are you currently carrying pressure that God never asked you to carry? What would it look like to say, like Joseph, “I cannot do it, but God can”?
- Pastor James made this observation: “Many of us worship God publicly while privately living like everything depends completely on us.”How honest does that feel when you hold it up against your own life? Where do you see that tension most clearly?
Prayer:
Lord, I’ll be honest — there are parts of my story right now that don’t make sense to me. The waiting has been longer than I expected. The silence has felt heavier than I thought I could handle. And if I’m really being honest, I’ve been letting my circumstances speak louder than Your promises.
I don’t want to live like everything depends on me. I’m tired of carrying weight You never asked me to carry. So today, like Joseph, I’m choosing to say — I can’t do this on my own. But I believe You can.
Help me trust that You are still working, even in the places I can’t see. Help me stop trying to force what only You can do. And remind me that You have not lost control for a single second of my story.
You knew where Joseph was the whole time. You know where I am too. I’m choosing to trust You with the timing.
Amen.
