When Following God Wears You Out

Main Scripture: Psalm 84

Don’t stop here; keep the conversation going on The Breakdown. Each week, we take this message further, talk through real-life applications, and wrestle with the questions you’re already asking. Just search “Journey Church with James Hilton” wherever you listen to podcasts or on YouTube.

  1. Think about a time you trained for something hard — a sport, a big project, a physical challenge. What kept you going when you wanted to quit? What made it feel worth it in the end?
  1. Pastor James reminded us that following God often makes us tired and weary. You’re willing, but you become weary on the walk of faith.  Does that statement resonate with you?  If so, how have you felt this in your own life?
  1. What do you think it means that the believers in Psalm 84 pass through the Valley of Baka (a place of dryness and weeping) rather than around it? Why do you think God doesn’t just reroute them?
  1. Pastor James pointed out that the word Baka means “place of dryness and weeping,” yet Psalm 84:6 says the believers “make it a place of springs.” He noted that only God can make a spring. What does that tell us about who is actually doing the work in our valleys?
  1. Read Psalm 84:5. The phrase “set on” is past tense — meaning the decision was already made before the journey began. Why do you think deciding in advance matters so much when it comes to following God through hard seasons?
  1. Is there an area of your life right now where you’re still going back and forth — where you haven’t fully set your heart? What’s making it hard to decide?
  2. Read Isaiah 40:31. Waiting is not sitting — it’s running and walking until you see the promise. How does that reframe the way you think about what it means to “wait on God”?
  1. Psalm 84:11 describes God as both a sun and a shield. Pastor James explained that as a sun, God provides everything you need when you need it, and as a shield, He protects you from your enemies. What’s the significance of holding both of those images together — provision and protection?
  1. Is there a valley in your life right now that you’re struggling to believe God can transform? What would it look like to begin to trust Him with it?

Pray: Lord, I’ll be honest — following You is harder than I expected. There are seasons where I’m willing but I’m worn out, and I don’t always know how to tell the difference between faithful perseverance and just running on empty. Would You remind me today that my weariness isn’t a failure — it’s an invitation to depend on You more fully? I choose today, even in the valley seasons that I will lean into your provision and protection as my sun and shield.  As I do, I believe you’ll make a spring in my dry valley.  Thank you for reminding me you’re always working for my good, I just have to keep waiting.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
