The Real Reason You Can’t Rest

Main Scripture: Deuteronomy 5:12-15

Don’t stop here; keep the conversation going on The Breakdown. Each week, we take this message further, talk through real-life applications, and wrestle with the questions you’re already asking. Just search “Journey Church with James Hilton” wherever you listen to podcasts or on YouTube.

  1. If you could design your perfect day off — money, responsibilities, and obligations aside — what would it look like from morning to night? What would be on the menu, and what would be completely off limits?
  1. In this sermon, Pastor James talks about Sabbath — the idea of intentionally stopping work one day a week as a gift from God. Before diving deeper, how would you personally define “rest”? Do you think most people around you would say they’re getting enough of it?
  2. Pastor James mentions that 55% of American workers say they’re burned out right now, and two out of three report experiencing burnout symptoms at their current job. Does that surprise you? Does it match what you see in your own life or in the people around you?
  1. Read Deuteronomy 5:12. The word “Sabbath” comes from a Hebrew word meaning to cease or to stop. Pastor James points out that God takes a verb — a doing word — and turns it into something you can have. What do you think it means that rest is something God wants to give you, not just something you earn by finishing?
  2. Read Genesis 2:2-3. God rested on the seventh day and blessed it and made it holy. Pastor James points out that this happened before there was any law, before there was anything wrong with the world. What does it tell you about rest that God built it into creation from the very beginning — not as a repair plan, but as part of the original design?
  3. Pastor James identifies four fears that keep people from resting:
    • Fear of missing out (if I stop, life happens without me)
    • Fear of not being enough (if I stop, they’ll find out I’m not enough)
    • Fear of leaving things incomplete (if I don’t handle this, nobody will)
    • Fear of being left exposed (if I stop, I’ll have to feel what I’ve been avoiding)

Which of these four fears do you think is most common? Which one do you think is most underestimated?

  1. Pastor James says, “Rest is not a time issue. Rest is a trust issue.” What are the things in your life right now that your hands are most tightly closed around? What would it actually look like to open your hands and trust God with those specific things?

Prayer

God, help me to actually rest. Not just waste time. Not just power down. But to stop, to be still, and to remember who you are and what you’ve already done. You brought people out of four hundred years of slavery with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. You can handle my inbox. You can handle my family. You can handle whatever I’ve been afraid to put down. Allow me to enjoy my life as you intended.  Amen.
