New Year. Same God. This is a phrase that I like to use when the New Year Blues roll around. You know what I’m talking about, right? The Christmas decorations are all put away, the house is quiet again, and of course, you have no food left in your fridge, so now your grocery list just went from 10 items to 25 items. Now it feels like you’ve been lazy, and your to-do list is growing by the second, and you’re getting ready to fall back into the same routines you had last year. The New Year’s Blues normally take place during that weird span of time between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. I think we can all agree that that time frame is a weird time frame. Some businesses are open, others aren’t. You’ve got some folks taking down Christmas on December 26th, and others who wait until New Year’s. Day. And then we’ve got the New Year goals, which can seem overwhelming! You begin to question; did I pick the right goal? Is this even something I want to accomplish? Was this too easy, too hard, maybe? Either way, the New Year is very exciting, but if we aren’t careful, we can slump into the New Year’s blues. But let’s allow the phrase ‘New Year. Same God,” to help us embrace the New Year and not begin to wait and hope for the idea of next year to begin to do the things we want!

For me, worship music has always been a way that the Lord speaks to me the most. And in the song ‘Same God’ during the bridge, we get to sing about all of the times God heard his children then, and how He hears us even now. Why? Because He is the same God. Here is how the bridge reads in case you’ve never heard the song before. (lyrics can also sometimes read as poetry, and to me, this bridge is poetry; let it wash over you and remind you of His faithfulness)

You heard Your children then
You hear Your children now
You are the same God
You are the same God
You answered prayers back then
And You will answer now
You are the same God
You are the same God

You were providing then
You are providing now
You are the same God
You are the same God
You moved in power then
God move in power now
You are the same God
You are the same God

You were a healer then
You are a healer now
You are the same God
You are the same God
You were a Savior then
You are a Savior now
You are the same God
You are the same God

When you find yourself beginning to stray back to your old ways after the new year, or even feel off about where the year is going, remind yourself that yes, this is a new year, but you serve the same God who heard Abraham, He heard the cries of Mary, and gave strength to David, and who sees YOU! Don’t let the enemy determine how your 2026 (or any year) should turn out. If you have breath in your lungs, you’ve been given a chance to live and worship the Lord, so do just THAT! Remember this: “He has made everything beautiful in its time.” Ecclesiastes 3:11 NIV.

So don’t put so much pressure on having to have everything figured out by January 1st. We can’t go into the New Year feeling as though we must have it all figured out, spotless clean house, goals for days, meal prep, all those things. And don’t get me wrong, those things are great, and if you can accomplish them, do them! If it’s a goal of yours to meal prep ahead of time, then make it a priority! Set-aside time every week to cook and prepare! But don’t feel as though you must have everything figured out come January 1st.  Let’s go into this New Year with the peace and comfort that yes, it’s a new year, but we serve the same God. He did not change year after year, and with that, we can rest in Him.
