There is something in us that longs for what Christmas promises. We want joy. We want peace. We want hope. We want the feeling that something good is coming, that something bright is breaking in, that something in our story is finally going to turn around. But the tension is this—those things feel so elusive. Christmas offers us words our hearts desperately want, but our lives don’t always reflect them. This week we are going to talk about the tension between what we hoped for and what life looks like right now.

  1. When you hear “Christmas is the season of joy, peace, and hope,” what honestly rises up in you right now? Joy? Numbness? Pressure? Sadness? Why do you think that is?
  2. Pastor James mentioned how Christmas exposes the tension between what we hope for and what we actually feel. Where do you feel that tension the most right now, and why does it hit you there?
  3. We heard that hope steps into the places where we can’t see a way out. Where in your life do you currently feel stuck, stretched, or unable to see a way forward? What would it look like to invite Jesus into that specific place this week?
  4. Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds were all in situations they didn’t choose. What is one part of your life right now that feels “unchosen,” and how could seeing God’s heart to step into our mess help you face it differently?
  5. Pastor James talked about how many of us live as if God handed us a to-do list instead of good news. Where do you notice yourself slipping into “good advice Christianity”? How does that shape your hope or your faith?
  6. What pressure are you carrying right now that might be killing your hope? What would it practically look like to lay that pressure down and trust what Christ has already finished instead of what you still feel you need to do?
  7. The angel announced, “A Savior has been born to you.” How does that hit you personally? What changes in your week if you believe God came to you, not when you got it together but right in the middle of your mess?
  8. Pastor James talked about how you don’t have to know how when you already know who. What is one “how” question dominating your mind right now? What would it look like to shift that question into a “who” prayer this week?
  9. The shepherds returned to the same fields, with the same pressures, but with a different hope. What is the “same field” you have to return to tomorrow? How could you walk back into that place—or that relationship, or that routine—with a different posture because of who Jesus is?
  10. What is one practical step you can take this week to anchor your hope in Jesus rather than in changed circumstances?
  11. Pastor James said hope rises when we stop trying to earn what God has already given. Where do you need to stop striving and start receiving this week? What would trusting Jesus instead of trying harder actually look like in your real life?
